One of the fellas shared this bit of history. Above is a custom Mauser varmint rifle chambered in the excellent .219 Donaldson Wasp. On it he has a 10 Unertl.
I love varminting, which means rabbits in my AO. Typically shot at about 150-180m with my Hornet (I know how much you adore the Hornet Shawn) or out to about 250-300m with my .204 Remington VLS.
There’s something very satisfying about making a 300m headshot on a rabbit.
That being said, I’m an old school kinda guy, and I’d love to get me some old school varminting gear like that piece in the pictures. Just beautiful.
Feral cats are a problem on the outskirts of urban areas, but not so much as you get further away from the cities.
I’ve only ever seen one cat ever while hunting, and that was back around 1985. It was a fucking huge ginger thing, and it was stalking some newborn sheep, so I shot it.
A far bigger problem on most farms here is foxes, which kill everything that moves and have no natural predators themselves. They’ll kill every hen on a farm just for fun. I’ve shot quite a few of them over the years, but mainly at close range after calling them in with a whistle. A .22LR or .22 WMR is all that’s needed for that kind of hunting.
