Colt 70 series 1911 chambered in .38 super by legendary shooting champion J Michael Plaxco. It is fairly common for gun slingers to evolve into gun builders—Clark, Wiegand, Nowlin, Crawford, Curtis, Nygord, (just to name a few) were all world class shooters prior to becoming gunsmiths. Plaxco was likely the most accomplished of them all. He was the only competitive shooter to win the triple crown of National IPSC Champion, World Speed Shooting Champion, and Second Chance. Mike shot for Smith and Wesson for years and was best known for pioneering the “Plaxco Comp” one of the first expansion chamber compensators. He was a voracious reader, quick witted, and liked by almost everyone in the industry. His book “Shooting from Within” spoke to the psychology of competitive shooting. I have always wanted one of Mike’s guns, and this one came to me via my friend @realcameronhopkins who found it in the wild and sent it my way. Most of these old pin guns are shot to pieces, but this one (according to the original owner) was only shot twice. He claims he took delivery of this gun and then two weeks later he took delivery of an Accucomp built by Bill Wilson. He claims the minute he shot the Accucomp, that’s all she wrote. It was love at first pew and that Accucomp would be the gun he would compete with forever. So the Plaxco comp gun was coated with oil and put away for over 30 years. When I received it, I shot it once and then detail stripped and ultrasonic cleaned it. The hard chrome looks brand new and it is as tight as a drum. Plaxco passed away in May of this year at 70 years old—leaving us diminished and with one fewer legend of sport. Grips by Craig Spegel…because we are not communists.
