1976 Colt 70 series 1911 in .45 ACP by Captain George Worthy out of Salinas CA. George was a special forces Green Beret in Vietnam and his handle was “George of the Jungle, which we see inscribed on the gas tank of his motorcycle. Following his military service he was a gunsmith in Salinas CA…that is until the law caught up with him. It seems old George had some missteps with manufacturing machine guns. He might have had a few lowers with extra holes in them that the California Feds were none too happy about. So, that was it for old George and guns. After that, he was a Sheriff, the mayor of Gonzales CA, and an instructor at gunsight from 80-85. This design of this beautiful pistol was clearly influenced by Pachmayr’s legendary Combat Special, and while it looks the part, and has a ton of soul, it lacks the accuracy work of a PCS—so it’s kinda “all hat and no cattle” as they say. But, it’s old school cool to me, featuring a Swenson single sided thumb safety, Hoag rear sight, Hoag custom beaver tail, throated barrel, flattened top of slide, commander hammer and 20 LPI checkering. Armand Swenson did a lot of George’s checkering, but I don’t think the Swede did this particular gun.
