A friend of Carlos Hathcock shared this in the Unertl collectors group. This scope is the 10X USMC Sniper Scope Unertl ade for the USMC for the M40A1. This was the last new design from Unertl. Presented as a gift to Carlos, it has the special serial number of “93”, Carlos’ official confirmed kill total and “White Feather” his Vietnamese nickname over the white feather he wore in his boonie hat.

He also says the rifle was Carlos’ custom rifle. A model 70 put in a McMillain M40 stock. I suppose we will take his word on it though I can’t verify that. Fitting a post 64 long action into a stock made for a short action round bottom M700 must have been a neat trick and I can’t imagine why that was done if the effort was to give Carlos a M40A1 clone.

I can’t help wondering why Carlos’s son did not keep this. Maybe Carlos gave it to his friend before he passed away in 1999. Anyway. A real piece of history.

You can see the same scope in Chandler’s book on Carlos, White Feather. My copy below.
