his gun is a dream come true for me. Two years ago I worked up enough nerve to call the legendary George Huening to ask him if he would build me a gun. He said what do you want, and I said I’ll leave it completely up to you, but I would like for it to be a carry comp. Well this masterpiece subsequently showed up late last year. I’ve shot it twice, and now I just sit and stare at it all day. Never heard of him? GH is one of the most brilliant pistolsmiths of all time. Prior to his foray into gunsmithing George was crew chief for Indy driver Gordy Johncock, who famously held off Rick Mears (in a hobbled car plagued with understeer) to win the 1982 Indy 500. So there’s one world title under the man’s belt. The other 18 came at the hands of Doug Koenig, the most accomplished Bianci Cup champion of all time. Who do you think builds Koenig’s guns? Yup, the consummate man behind the man, George-fucking-Huening, that’s who. What’s he like? He’s a total gentleman and the virtual definition of humble. Ask Jason Burton or Pete Single who their gunsmithing hero is. That’s all you need to know. If I had to run into my house (while it was on fire) and come out with one gun…..you’re looking at it. This 1911 is now completed with a set of hand checkered double diamond grips by the venerable Jon Aho
Now, I’m a revolver guy, but that piece looks pretty sweet. And built by the guy who made Koenig’s guns? I wouldn’t give my left nut, but I’d like to discuss the options.
