I always hated something about the hunting forum on the now super cringe and gay, AR15.com. The vast majority of the members wanted to know how various premium bullets would perform. Not on paper, not on gel. On something alive. Something roughly the size of a man. The boys hunting hogs and deer would get the newest high performance factory load, or bullet and hand load it.. and then go out and shoot something in the brain.. Completely useless. You could head shoot a deer with some of the newer air rifle slugs and have a clean kill. That tells us that the new load you paid 2 dollars a round for to get excellent terminal performance is capable of doing something you could do with a Silver Bear FMJ. Outstanding work..

Anyway. Here is some real world results from this past week of deer season. This was the hole of a shoulder shot from 156 yards. The ammo was the old black coated TAP round. The 75 grain hollow point boat tail ” T2″ bullet has always been extremely satisfying on full grown deer.

You can see the opposite side entry hole and the closest hole is the exit. Oddly enough while skinning it I did not expect to see an exit hole. None was visible. I assumed the bullet had come to rest some where in the chest cavity. Nope. It was just under the hide.

Recovered 75gr bullet from the 5.56MM.

It didn’t occur to me to take it home and weigh it to see how much of it stayed together. But it looks like most of it did.

The various Hornady rounds in 75gr are excellent in my opinion. I bought up a bunch of it what seems like aeons ago and slowly use it for deer hunting and sometimes let friends had a few rounds to use when they lack confidence in whatever ammo they have for hunting. The above results made the user a confirmed fan for life.

As for BARFCOM there was a guy there who used the heavier bullets on wild hogs and he shot to the body. I can’t recall his user name at all. He used a SIG 556 for a long time. I have no idea why he liked it so much. I have no doubt he is banned from BARFCOM now or moved on. But, if you see this post SIG556 using guy, thanks for all the effort you put in testing premium 5.56MM loads on hogs.

If this type of real world testing is of interest to you, the Rokslide hunting forum has a large thread on various 22 projectile performance on game animals. Its in the firearms forum.
