“56 years ago I was in the middle of the jungle in some of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War, we were in the “Forbidden Zone” between War Zone C & D, near the Song Be River and the Cambodian Border…during a quick firefight, I was shot in my right arm, but able to continue without any hospital time….the next 2 upcoming days were horrendous, many killed and wounded on both sides, with the hostilities ceasing on Easter Sunday after we (our Mike Force and elements of the Big Red One) ran the North Vietnamese back across the border. It was a very brutal time for all involved, we (approx 30 of us) had evacuated the dead & wounded and were awaiting to be extracted. It was one of those hot and miserably humid jungle days, 100+ degrees and we were on the banks of the Song Be River….there was a young Chaplain (Tenn. Baptist) just out of Divinity school who was so scared he was as white as a ghost and shaking like a dog crapping razor blades, but would not leave us until we were all extracted and safe…anyway, as it was hot, some of us waded into the river while others stood guard with their weapons, then we’d trade places….so this one good ole Alabama boy yelled out to the Chaplain that as it was Easter Sunday, it would be fitting that he come down into the river and Baptise all our sorry asses…..without hesitation, the Pastor entered the river and baptized all of us….to this day, we all remember the “Great Song Be River Baptism” of Easter Sunday, 1967….”
