I get asked a lot about favorite guns. Well here is one of them. This stainless 80 series Colt in .45 ACP was built by Kim Ahrends in 1995. Ahrends, out of Des Moines Iowa, is best known for his custom grips, but he was also a very accomplished pistolsmith. In the late 80s and 90s (before he started his grip business) Kim was crafting beautiful custom 1911s. This gun is tight as a drum, with a hard fit Barsto barrel, beautiful hand checkering, and a lustrous satin finish. The boy named Kim could build a gun. If you see a third-generation Smith and Wesson “elephant ear” site on a 1911, it’s either Ahrends or a Devel. If it’s the latter, and it’s for sale, Wayne Novak has died. This gun finally “complete” in my mind after sourcing African Ebony grips made by Kim. What’s right is right–no Spegels for this one
