The idea of using ratshot as the first round in a home defence gun has some appeal, if you think you can fire the first round into the intruders face and eyes to blind him, then finish him at your leisure.
On the other hand, a JHP of your choice into the intruders face will only require one shot for terminal effect.
The only benefit I see for the shot round is if you are really concerned about penetration through drywall into an adjacent room.
Just for fun I think I’ll load up some shot into .38 Special rounds and see what they do to paper targets at living room ranges.
The problem is that the rat shot won’t cycle the action so if it doesn’t work you now got a really pissed off dude ready to kill you and you have to rack the slide try clear the damn thing
