While spelunking in the USPTO database, I noticed a patent from William E. “Bert” Brown of Powder Springs, GA. Brown is the founder of Talon Armament, and the inventor of their “Clench Grip,” a moldable AR-15 pistol grip.

While Talon Armament is best known for AR-pattern rifles, this patent application is for a fresh-sheet handgun design. What is notable is the use of angled slide rails, allowing for the user to get his hand higher behind the bore axis. In recoil, the slide will cycle up and to the rear. Think of it as the JatiMatic SMG crossed with a conventional short-recoil handgun.

Looks like a pretty dramatic design move for minimal gain. I wonder what the downsides are?

I had to look up the JatiMatic. That was new for me…although I kinda remember an odd looking SMG in Red Dawn.

      Stallone used it in Cobra

You know, I just assumed it was an MP5….I mean, all SMGs were MP5s back then.

  2. Tom Stone says:

A very cool design that accomplishes the same thing a compensator does.

    1. Tom says:

Maybe add a comp to it also?

    2. John M. says:

Comps spew gases and particles everywhere. Not a big deal if you are shooting bullseye on the square range, but no fun at all when shooting from retention.

I like the premise here. It’s definitely not another 1911 or another off-brand Glock.
