After the Instagram vote I set out to do a project on the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion. It was originally just going to be a static display with a few carbine pouches but I was having enough fun with it that I decided to do a full to do with it. Brace yourself, it’s about to get real nerdy.

Of the original pictures of the battalion in Operation Dragoon this one is my favorite. It has such a distinct look about it. This became the basis for my impression.

I included this version of the photo as it is a bit bigger and has Privates Welsh’s info on it.

I get a kick out of this one because not only did it come out pretty nice looking but it is a good example of camouflage principles. Yes the patter and colors blend in well but the exposed arms and face really stand out as well as the white undershirt. Also the shape of the helmet contrasts with the surroundings.

This picture was later on in France I believe. The paint has mostly worn off of the uniforms. Its is a really goo shot of the different gear used though.

The rest of the photos aren’t really recreations of any originals but few I took in series. So make sure to click/swipe right or left to see them all.
