Well, that was quicker than I thought.

Opening day was nothing but cold rain. I took my best friend and son with me opening day. They had never been before and I had really hoped beginner’s luck would come out and my friend would get one. No joy.

Despite being soaked and freezing, a good time was had by all.

Sunday I waited till after about 100PM as I am wont to do when hunting on my own terms. On a whim, I took the Remington USMC M40 sniper rifle. I always thought it would be cool to take a deer with it.

I had not been sitting down for 10 minutes and was in the middle of eating a Hershey bar when this little 7 point came out behind me. Smacked him down with a 165 grain Barnes Triple Shock X solid copper hollow point.

Unluckily for my brother, he was near so I made him come help me drag it off the mountain.

Not my biggest racked deer, but I will take any with horns. I don’t hunt over bait, use an ATV, a blind or tree stand. When you walk and stalk them, you take what you can get when the opportunity presents itself.

I wouldn’t pass it up. Congrats!

Monday starts gun season here. Gonna go out with Dad and see what happens. Need to put some meat in the freezer so I’ll be in “if it’s brown, put it down mode”.
