Milius, Herr and Coppola produced a masterpiece.

In the first place, Charlie did not in fact surf. He was too busy tunneling.

Cinematography was fantastic. Music also fantastic. Choice of sets extremely realistic. Gear for the most part was quite authentic, except for all the 30-round magazines, of which I saw very, very few.

The Air Cav scenes were great, but where were the Cobra gunships? I’d guess the Flips didn’t have any, so……

Speaking of Snakes? No snakes. Tigers and puppy dogs but no snakes. Not Viet Nam without snakes!

They could have left out the part with the French in the director’s cut, although it was interesting, but the NVA would have made it a point to obliterate their little enclave about 20-years earlier (see Street Without Joy), so more than just a little unrealistic.

Bottom line, it wasn’t any more fucked up, surrealistic or unlikely than the real thing. Were the characters of Kilgore, Kurtz and Willard based on real people? Of that, I have no doubt. 10 out of 5 stars, do recommend.

French enclaves did still exist during the war, they paid the NVA off, they paid the Saigon gov off and they were left alone, because money is always more important that principals

I love the first chunk of the movie. But after Colonel Kilgore takes the point from Charlie; I lose interest in it.
