Always always always wear eyepro and earpro.
I’ve been shooting regularly for just shy of 45 years, as grunt and as a civilian. in that time, I can think of at least a half dozen occasions where large fragments have bounced off my protective glasses, and innumerable occasions where tiny pieces have been deflected.
I shoot a lot of PPC with revolvers, so you just need a bit of lead or powder to spit from the barrel-cylinder gap and bounce off the barricade into your eye at high speed to cause permanent damage. I also regularly shoot the Action Match falling plates, and when you’re shooting steel from ten yards you’re guaranteed to get splashback every now and then.
As for earpro, well, if you’re not wearing it then you’re too stupid to own firearms.
Which reminds me, I’m a strong believer in the right to keep and bear arms, but I’m also a strong believer that there are fucking fools, criminals etc who should never be allowed near a firearm. It’d be interesting to have a discussion here about where people draw that line, if they draw it anywhere.
For example, I believe that Muslims shouldn’t be allowed to own firearms in Western societies. Actually, I believe that Muslims shouldn’t be allowed in western societies, but I guess it’s too late for that. Then there’s people who’ve publicly called for restrictions on firearms ownership. No guns for them. Etc etc

Ive always worn glasses so that has saved my eyes a few times. I always order my prescription lens in that stranger stuff.

re wearing glasses, likewise. My prescription is bad enough I pretty much need to get the high-index material.
I’d say, even so, it’s definitely worth it to search out a good, well-fitting and reasonably comfortable over-the-glasses pair of safety glasses/goggles. Apart from better coverage (if your regular eyewear doesn’t have side / top shields) it acts an an ablative layer to protect high-dollar corrective lenses.

The only fail I ever had was with Remington .357 mag ammo. The case split and a chunk blew out and hit my glasses. I still have that box of ammo. I didn’t hurt my M19 Smith.
