Since the early days of the M16 troubles in the Vietnam war, guys had been taping the cleaning rod to the rifle in the event of a stuck case or malfunction that needs clearing fast. Unlike the much more over hyped AK-47, the M16 pattern rifle does not have a built in ability to carry a solid rod already stored on the rifle next to the barrel.

The makers of the invincible AK made a cleaning rod for it? And put it on the rifle???!!

Anyways.. Some bright spark has decided to come up with a way for you to mount a cleaning rod right to the carbine again because time is a flat circle and what was once old, is now new and cool again.

The rescue rod, clips right to your rail. Because, of course it does. The good old Picatinny rail is every useful.

The Black Hills Designs – RESCUE ROD a way of mounting a full length monolithic 7.62 AK or similar cleaning rod on your AR15 or similar rifle to address catastrophic malfunctions.

Is this a good idea? I don’t know. I can think of a lot of reason’s its a bad idea but I can see some good in it. I think I would rather these things be made of metal that bolts on. Otherwise something could catch the rod and flick them off.

Beats duct tape and and trying to peel that off to get to the rod and having to deal with that sticky residue.

I think the idea is good for something like a rifle you keep in the trunk or some End Of The World rifle set up that you’d have with no expectation of support for.

Take a look if you think this is a worthy addition to your kit.

The need for a clearing/cleaning rod often goes underappreciated on AR15s or modern fighting rifles. However, this is not an excuse for an essential piece of infantry equipment to be unaccommodated. Through extensive testing at Black Hills Designs we have discovered a consistent trend of some ammunition+barrel combos sticking cases when fouled or rims being ripped off. The safest way to clear these malfunctions is to use a full length monolithic cleaning rod. No more trying to snap off the end of your knife in the chamber.  No more destroying your collapsible rod on a stuck case.

The Black Hills Designs RESCUE ROD allows you to mount a full length 7.62 AK or similar (~1/8″/4.5mm) cleaning rod on your AR15 or similar modern fighting rifle. The RESCUE ROD attaches directly to your upper receiver and snugly retains the cleaning rod until it is needed to clear a catastrophic malfunction. The RESCUE ROD can be installed or removed easily by the user without the use of tools.

The RESCUE ROD is sold in a two pack, purchase one = receive two clips

Protip from Black Hills Designs: While the RESCUE ROD is compatible with segmented rods, they are not recommended due to their propensity to break under heavy use.

I think that item is a great idea…for those guys that buy into the trend that an AR doesn’t need to be cleaned as long as it is heavily lubed. That works fine until it doesn’t, then they will need that cleaning rod to clear their jam. Good luck with that in a gunfight.

For the rest of you that spend 10 minutes to clean your M4’s after every time you shoot it, that item is not needed.

On all the teams i served on over 27 years in Special Forces, I never saw an M4 or M16 jam that required a cleaning rod or any other tool to clear, remedial action or double feed clearing procedure was all that was required. We cleaned our M16’s and M4’s after every use. Hmmm I wonder if there’s a correlation? 10 minutes of maintenance time is a small price to pay for weapons we met our nation’s enemies with.
