A few times My Dad told me about one of the nights their Firebase was almost over run. Dad was in charge of a 105Mm section and at one point during the night he dropped the tube on the 105 to fire directly into the attacking NVA using the Beehive round.

The next morning as they went out to look around and police up bodies and ammo of the dead NVA he was at the treeline looking around and found a tree with what looked like ground raw hamburger pinned to the trunks by the flechettes from the M546 APERS rounds.

Dad was a big fan of the beehive rounds after that. The various beeheive rounds used in the 105mm, the recoilless rifles and aerial rockets were used a lot in the war to break attacks, clear landing zones and knocking down brush.

Several years ago, I had a neighbor who was a Vietnam vet. Being a young gun geek, I asked him about M-16 vs AK. He patiently explained that he was on a 105 crew and, if the enemy was in visual range, they sighted down the bore and loaded beehive. Learned a new word that day.
