Shooter, author, legendary grip guru. Roper grips were aftermarket target stocks marketed by Walter Roper from 1934 to 1952. I say marketed, because Roper never made anything himself. All of his grips were made by two men in his employ – Matheis Gagne and WDH Nichols. Gagne made grips during the entire run, with Nichols joining during the mid to late period to focus on grip for semi-automatic pistols. Gagne’s specialty was revolver stocks, and the distinctive three arched finger tip ribbon found on many Roper grips was his signature mark. Ropers never had a makers mark per se, so the ribbon, in combination with a couple other more subtle features, is the way most Roper stock’s are identified and authenticated. I have 2 sets of Roper 1911 grips—they are very hard to come by because revolvers were king during the time period that Ropers were made. Swipe left and look at these 1911 grips. Do you think anyone alive today could make these? Tell me about your Ropes.

The German firm Karl Nill (www.nill-griffe.com) is crafting similar grips today for revolvers and semiautos, and they are magnificent things to behold.

I have KN grips on three of my guns…two S&W revolvers and my 1911. I dunno about the rest of the world, but every serious pistolero in Australia uses KN grips. They have everything from functional grips for fighting guns, through to “wooden gloves” for Bullseye style competitions.

It’s worthwhile checking their website, for the beautiful firearm photography alone. The guys who work there really love their guns.
