I’ve always wanted one of these. I’ve seen a half dozen over the years. None made by Armalite and all by a different company. Who the hell is it makes them now? Henry I think? Of course it’s some abomination with a rail on top because its 2025. I looked at one a few months ago. It felt cheap as shit. Of course they were never some high quality item but i do recall the older ones being at least something I wouldn’t feel like I was flushing money down the toilet if I bough it.

I love the idea of one for a stow away into the back of the truck or a backpack. Of course like all ideas it has more appeal in my imagination that it ever would in reality. Who among us would just take this? We all know we’d have something more serious and useful in addition to a side arm.

A few years ago the husband of a friend at work died. A year or so later she came to me and said that while cleaning up some of his stuff under the house she’d come across a toy pistol and what seemed like the butt of a gun. I told her to bring it to me and I’d sort it out.

The toy pistol was a very faithful copy of a Smith Model 29, and after a few seconds I realised that the “rifle butt” was an AR-7 along with a box of .22 hollow points.

My heart nearly sank out through my arse, because having possession of an unregistered semiauto rifle in Australia is a go-straight-to-jail offence.

As it turned out, the local cops were thrilled to take it off my hands. As they explained, most rookie cops have no experience with guns, so they have a big warehouse full of all sorts of guns where all the rookies go for firearms familiarisation training, so they’ll know what they’re looking at when they see something in the field. And what they really wanted was an AR-7 to add to their collection.

    I was an…interesting experience.
