Jim Boland’s “Space Gun” in .38 Super, designed for shooting steel as the Steel Challenge was then held at the Mad Doctor’s home range, Wes Thompson’s Juniper Tree Range. The pistol features Boland’s incredible beavertail work and his signature “gas pedals and mud flaps” (enlarged ambi safety levers with a thumb guard to keep from retarding the slide’s cycling with a high-thumb grip). Note the compensator closeup too. Jim was brilliantly talented but perhaps the curse of genius was too much— he died tragically from alcohol abuse, chain smoking and an overall self-destructive lifestyle. RIP amigo.
