In March 1967, the U.S. Air Force ordered 30 special Model 41 pistols for SR-71 Blackbird pilot survival kits. Equipped with threaded 5-inch barrels, slide locks, “sound depressors,” and extra magazines, they were designed to give downed pilots a quiet way to defend themselves or forage behind enemy lines.

Soooo…that’s a scope mounted on the gun, and the suppressor is mounted on top of the scope for easy access? Amirate?

I worked for many years with an ex SR-71 pilot. After he left the airfarce (see what I did there?) he worked for Boeing as an instructor instructor pilot, as in he was one of a very small number of pilots who trained the instructors who trained airline pilots in how to fly Boeing aircraft. I’m no pilot, but I’d say the man had some rare and special flying skills. He had definitely seen some shit.

He was an extremely still and soft spoken and calm man. I swear his heart rate probably never got above 60bpm, even when everybody around him was utterly losing their shit. One of those blokes prone to providing long silences and cold stares when anybody said something really dumb. The sort of guy you want in the cockpit when things take a turn for the worse, rather than a 20-something woman who is likely to land the aircraft upside down.

I’m retired now and haven’t seen him for quite a while. I wonder if he carried one of those guns in the aircraft with him?
