Don Nygord out of Prescott AZ was one of the most influential precision pistol shooters of the 20th century. Revered both as a world-class competitor and an innovative gunsmith, Nygord helped modernize Olympic-style pistol shooting in the United States and became a legendary figure in international target shooting circles. Nygord attended Oregon State before serving in the Air Force. His foray into competitive shooting began in the military. He first achieved national prominence in 1966 when he won the Civilian National Championship at Camp Perry. Initially focused on “bullseye” shooting, he later transitioned into international UIT/ISSF disciplines such as Air Pistol and Free Pistol. By 1978, he had earned a place on the U.S. National Shooting Team. Nygord won multiple gold medals at the 1979 Pan American games and captured a World Championship in Santo Domingo in 1981. Over his career he became a 16-time National Champion, held more than 40 U.S. national records, and represented the United States in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. Beyond competition, Nygord was also a pioneering pistolsmith and equipment innovator. Through his company Nygord Precision Products, he imported and customized elite European target pistols for American shooters. Nygord was equally admired as a teacher and coach. He wrote extensively about the mental side of shooting, visualization, sight alignment, trigger control, and performance psychology. Many competitive shooters still study his training notes decades after his death because of their clarity and practical insight. He emphasized discipline, repetition, and the importance of mental focus under pressure. Don’s influence extended far beyond medals: he shaped equipment design, coaching philosophy, and generations of shooters who followed him. After his passing in 2004 he remained a near-mythic figure within the precision pistol community. #donnygord #legendofsport
