An American marine shows a Japanese “turtle shell” body armor that was captured by U.S. Marines on Saipan, summer 1944. This project ceased in about 1940 and further research was abandoned.

What few pieces of the tortoise armor was created must have been shipped to the defenders of Saipan, with at least one example captured by the USMC.
