I had an idea for an alternate ending for Apocalypse. Willard kills Kurtz, just like in the movie, but all Kurtz’s followers surround Willard and refuse to allow him to leave. Instead, they bow down to worship him. Willard then assumes command of the group and continues Kurtz’s work.
The movie ends with another meeting in the general’s trailer, only differing from the first in that a different young captain has been summoned from Saigon and is shown Willard’s dossier, not Kurtz’s. The general says that Willard’s methods have become “unsound” as he passes the roast beef. Harrison Ford then tells the new captain to “terminate Captain Willard’s command” and the CIA guy says, “with extreme prejudice.” Clearly the cycle has started over, yet again. The closing scene flashes back to Willard, still at Kurtz’s village and having just killed Kurtz, leaning on his ax, dripping with Kurtz’s blood and whispering, “the horror, the horror.”
