Custom 1911 by Texas pistolsmith Mylie Hudson. About 18 months ago, a friend of mine came across a Mylie Hudson-built 1911 on GunBroker. I had never owned or seen one, so I bought it and started doing what I always do—researching the man behind the gun. To my surprise, I found him. I called him and discovered at 85 years old, he was still an active sheriff. So I asked him, “When did you retire from gunsmithing?” His answer was “I haven’t.” He told me he was still building 1911s for cops—or anybody else who asked him. So naturally, I had one more question: I asked do you have one more in you? He said “no problem.” He already had a Gold Cup lower but he needed a slide. So I found this 70 series slide on GB and sent it to him. This gun with a masterfully fit Bomar and Barsto pipe is what the man sent back! What he charged me for the build borders on ridiculous by today’s pricing…so I sent him more than he asked for. Mylie doesn’t do finishing so he told me the gun would need to be sent out for that. I told him send it back in the white and I will have Glenrock do the honors. Is Mylie’s checkering as good as Burton’s? No it isn’t. So why do I love this gun so much? I suspect it’s because I love the man who built it. He simply the coolest guy I have ever met in my life. That’s why it gets my last set of Spegels.
