This 70 series colt in .45 ACP was made by German gunsmith Fred Schmidt. It features Swenson ambidextrous safety, Smith & Wesson low mount K sight, Kings grip safety, commander hammer, and a welded up NM pipe. Schmidt, a member of the APG, was a German machinist and gunsmith at Walther for years. After which, he opened a custom shop in Mechanicsville Virginia called, you guessed it, Fred’s Gun Shop. He was known for his PPC “Short Cylinder Conversions” where the cylinder was cut for 38 special wadcutters. Fred passed away in 1986, and his friend and colleague Jerry Keefer bought most of his equipment from his wife Greta. I shot this old girl last week and she was flawless. Now with upgraded hand stickiness by masters of their crafts Pete Single and Craig Spegel. The gun deserved both.
